Natural Disasters Cause 11% of Network Outages but 62% of Network Downtime

Last month it was the blackout. This month it's Hurricane Isabel, which cut off power and disrupted phone service in several southeastern states. Two major disasters in a row is a huge test of the telecom industry's emergency preparedness.
Unfortunately, some telecoms aren't passing the test. As of this writing, a week after Isabel hit, thousands of customers are still without phone service. Customers notice when service isn't quickly restored, they remember it, and they're often very unforgiving.
Too many telecoms have inadequate disaster recovery plans. In our last Protocol survey, only just over half of our respondents said they were fully prepared for a commercial power failure. Only 80% said they had any power outage backup plan at all.
Blackouts and hurricanes seem like rare events, but in reality, disasters regularly and severely affect network operations. Natural disasters cause only 11% of all network outage incidents, but they account for a whopping 62% of all network downtime.
Unexpected events will happen to you. Unless you have a proactive plan of network monitoring and disaster recovery, your business is vulnerable.
